St. Clement’s Day of Donations
Are you seeking a place to show off museum-worthy relics? If you have historic documents, photos or memorabilia connected to St. Clement’s Island or the Colton’s Point area, your treasure may have found its future.
The island museum seeks pieces to create a new exhibit. On its Community Day February 8, (10am-4pm) museum staff will scan photos and documents, or photograph objects and people for potential new exhibits or collections. Staff will also gladly accept items from people who wish to make a donation to the museum’s collection.
Of special interest are information and items from and about local boat builders; the Golden and Shirley K hotels and the hotels on St. Clement’s Island; the Blackistone Island Canning Company; photos of the island and the Blackistone Lighthouse; information about living on St. Clement’s Island and/or living in Colton’s Point; steamboats at Colton’s Point landing; and more.
The potential is rich. At the museum’s Appraiser Fair on January 26, 160 people brought items ranging from artwork to farm implements — including World War II documents, a collection of cigarette tins from the 1890s and a child’s toy sword from the 1860s — to be considered by six appraisers.
The day also marked the opening of two new exhibits at the museum. Showing thru March are artist Nichole Stewart’s Portrait of St. Mary’s, and Chopticon High School student Josh Guy’s Businesses People Used and Loved in St. Mary’s County.
