The Cow in Patrick O’Shanahan’s Kitchen
When Patrick O’Shanahan stumbles into the kitchen for “another boring breakfast,” he’s in for a surprise. Dad is making his World Famous French Toast, and there’s a cow in the kitchen. As if that’s not exciting enough, a trio of hens “bagaaaawwwkkk” in the fridge, and maple trees spring up from the floor.
In these days when kids from cities and suburbs know only that food comes from the grocery store, Patrick’s about to learn a big lesson, all based on the ingredients in Dad’s specialty.
With growing concerns over obesity, food recalls, genetically modified food and factory farms, food is not only what’s on our plates but also what’s on our minds. Diana Prichard’s The Cow in Patrick O’Shanahan’s Kitchen helps parents talk with children about where food comes from and how it is produced. Bold illustrations by Heather Devlin Knopf invite kids into the story.
Prichard’s mother advised her to marry a hog farmer. Instead, she married an engineer and became a hog farmer herself. A freelance agriculture and food journalist, Prichard wants to educate families about food and farming. She has traveled to Africa and the Middle East to report on nutrition, farming practices and food security.
