The Marine Trades Want You

Recreational boating in Maryland is a $2.4 billion industry looking for new employees to meet the demand.
From as young as 11 to adults, girls and boys, men and women of all educational levels, including college grads, need to look no further for a potential job or career opportunity than on and around the waters of Maryland. And no farther than the 7th Annual Marine and Maritime Career Fair on February 25.
Consider that there are 181,544 registered boats in Maryland plus 7,854 documented vessels — that need maintenance, insurance, financing, to be sold, managed and more. There are marinas, boat yards, mobile maintenance services, engine dealers, restaurants and dozens of ancillary service industries.
There are still more jobs in marine sciences and environmental protection.
The fair opens doors to all those jobs.
More than 50 organizations will be on hand to discuss careers in the marine trades and the maritime sciences as well as educational and apprentice opportunities. You’ll meet marine professionals, entrepreneurs, student peers and reps from colleges and training programs. You’ll learn about marine and maritime scholarships and the Marine Trades Association of Maryland’s Pre-Apprenticeship Summer Internship Training Program. You’ll also find sessions on a vast array of maritime and marine pathways.
“We have shared our maritime opportunities and career paths with hundreds of young folks,” said Ginny Mininger of one career direction, Watermark Tours. “Most notably was an eager young lady who had joined our operation as a ticket taker agent. She continues to impress us with her management, administrative and customer service skills.”
The career fair is free and sponsored by the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation, with support from the Marine Trades Association of Maryland and the Living Oceans Foundation.
Come and find out why Kenneth Grahame author of The Wind in the Willows, wrote, “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as messing about in boats.”

Saturday February 25, Noon-3pm, Annapolis High School, 2700 Riva Rd., Pre-register for a chance for door prizes: www.eycfoundation.org/programs/maritime-career-awareness/2017-career-fair.
