Way Downstream …(Aug. 15-21, 2019)
In Ocean City, there was excitement at Sunset Marina when Michael Jordan’s 80-foot Viking, Catch 23, turned up at the White Marlin Open, one of more than 400 vessels registered for the competition last week. No, his Airness didn’t soar in these finals: The Open championship and its $1 million-plus prize went to Tommy Hinkle, a high school math teacher at nearby Berlin.
But the buzz surrounded Jordan, who wore No. 23 in his 15-year career in the National Basketball Association. For those living on Pluto, Jordan was an otherworldly hoopster with steely nerves and kangaroo springs in his legs.
Jordan, 56, made $100 million playing basketball and probably more selling Nike Air Jordan shoes. These days, MJ owns the Charlotte Hornets NBA team, a franchise that has grown in value by roughly $500 million since it became his in 2010.
His fishing boat? We noted that a 2016 Viking 80 is for sale in Miami for $6.9 million, pocket change for Jordan. We’re wondering what level of buzz there’d have been in OC if Jordan had brought along his other boat. That would be a 230-foot mega-yacht, the one with eight cabins, a luxurious dining room and a full gym. Oh, and a full-length basketball court on deck.
Know of any slips that could handle that one?
