What’s in a Name?
Petie Greens is a name worth money.
Along with the building bearing the nameplate, a third Petie Greens Bar and Restaurant is scheduled to open in Deale in fall.
Petie Greens earned popularity for breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout southern Anne Arundel and northern Calvert counties under the ownership of Sam ‘Petie’ Petro, who restored the rundown site and reputation early in the century. Bobby Crane took ownership a few years later, keeping a moniker that was money in the bank.
Riding high on that success, Crane this year moved up from those small quarters to the wide-open spaces of the former Calypso Bay. Petie Greens sat vacant nine months. Now the spot with a long history is about to reopen.
In the 1930s, it was Matt Windsor’s general store, with the only phone in the area. Later came The Beachcomber, a local watering hole. In 1963, Millie Moore changed the name to Billy Jac’s, a dive with fine crabcakes.
