501/2 Days to Savor Summer

We’ve reached the midpoint of that wonderful 101-day stretch from Memorial Day to Labor Day. That means we’ve 501/2 days to savor summer, and still plenty of Ways to Have Fun in Chesapeake Country. Our Indispensable Guide to Summer in Chesapeake Country is, once again this year, full of annotation, but it’s not used up yet.

As July flies by, we’re looking ahead to the first week of August, which brings two of our annual summer favorites. And, wouldn’t you know it, they’re back to back, so we hardly have time to recover our appetite from one before we’re off to the other.

August 3 brings us Calvert County’s 25th Annual Celebration of Life Gala, at Rod ‘n’ Reel, with the finest and most abundant feasting on the Bay — while contributing to fight against cancer. Mayor Gerald Donovan and honorary chairs Johnny and Connie Gott intend to make the biggest contribution ever, topping last year’s $345,000. For such a cause, tickets — $125 in advance, $150 at the door (www.rodnreelcancergala.org)— are a bargain.

August 4 brings us the Rotary Club of Annapolis’ Annual Crab Feast at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, another extravaganza of feasting for good causes. From 5 to 8pm that night, we’ll be devouring steamed crabs, corn and Adams barbecue, washing it down with beer. Sure all that eating is hard work, but Rotary divides its take — $47,600 last year — among so many good, local causes (20 last year; new grants made each year) that it’s a job we’re eager to do. Again, $45 in advance and $50 at the gate, is a bargain: 410-263-0678; www.annapolisrotary.com.
